Achieving those new years resolutions

The Ideas2Market team would like to wish you a happy new year and all the best for 2011… we hope you find all the motivation and determination you need to achieve your new years resolutions. Here are a couple of tips to help you stay on track with your goals this year!

1.  Write your resolutions and goals down on paper, somewhere you can see them. A friend of mine laminates hers and sticks them to the bathroom mirror where she can see them every day. You could also stick them to the fridge, make them your desktop background, or keep them in your wallet. Whatever works for you!

2.  Make them SMART. Smart goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. This means you need to be specific and define exactly what you are trying to achieve, and you need to describe how you will know when you have achieved it. It must be physically possible and it must not be too difficult – a challenge is great, but keep it real. Your goal must also have a time frame – set a date for when you hope to have achieved it.  For example, a vague goal statement might be “I will take some professional development courses”. This can be turned into a SMART goal statement like this: “By 31 March 2011, I will have researched and decided on two courses I want to complete over a six month period. I will register in my first course to start by 31 May 2011, and complete the courses by 31 December 2011.”

3.  Send yourself a reminder. Use your email calendar or a program such as ‘Future Me’ ( to send yourself reminders at different times throughout the year. It’s so easy to get distracted and lose focus…these messages can keep you on track and remind you what you are aiming for.

4.  Talk about them! Tell friends and family what you are trying to achieve. The additional support will help and you’ll also feel more accountable if you’ve told others that you’re going to do something.

If you have tips for achieving your goals, please post a comment and share them. Good luck and have a great year!
